Boxing is experiencing a significant decline this year, with a scarcity of big events and far less compelling bouts than normal. The anticipation of a serious and intriguing heavyweight clash between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the O₂ Arena provides some solace to the challenged industry. The victor will very likely face the world champion Usyk next year. In stark contrast, the unsuccessful boxer is expected to regret the unavoidable deterioration of their hard-won plaudits.

Danger and Risk Define This Clash

Parker rides a impressive streak since his last defeat to opponent Joe Joyce three years ago. The experienced New Zealander, who won a world title in 2016, has been revitalized by his change in coaching to the motivational Andy Lee. He invariably recovers but Wardley possesses more power than any opponent he's encountered – with the exception of Wilder who seemed a shadow of a knockout artist when Parker secured a dominant decision win in late 2023.

Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only took up boxing when he was twenty, had no amateur boxing history and has always had to overcome doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is equally near to a shot at the title.

“This is the biggest bout, right now, in the heavyweight division. These two boxers have taken a risk when neither fighter was required to take this bout. Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have previously mandated Usyk to fight him, but the Ukrainian was sidelined. Joseph insists on fighting.

“Fabio is similarly well-placed and he merely needed to be patient for his chance. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He desired to compete – and versus Parker because it provides him a shot to skip the line.”

Parker’s Perspective

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not thinking about losing. I have respect for my rival and his achievements and his preparation for this bout. But I am on a higher plane and I am going to show it on the day of the bout.”

The Perspective of Wardley

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the pair of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my professional life and the greatest challenge I've faced. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I elevate my performance. The upcoming fight will be no different. The separation between where Joe is and where people think I am has been a recurring narrative throughout my career.

“He has vast experience for a long time, with a numerous contests on his ledger. In no way is he an old man but he has been in the game for a long time and had numerous grueling matches. I too have faced intense battles and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a lot more of those compared to me.”

The Ultimate Prediction

But the general belief is that Parker is likely to be too experienced, and too skilful, for his opponent. He should win a bruising battle with the confidence that he is the leading contender for Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a clear gap.
