Our Diamond Family Alternative Gaming of the Year List for This Year
So, what did you think of this year in your family? Was it entirely positive as one might claim on online? Packed with top marks for the kids and riotous themed fancy dress birthday parties for the adults? Or perhaps it was a sea of letdowns with only occasional fun moments? And was any of it authentic, or are we all digitally altered synthetic personas with perfect teeth?
I've assembled my thoughts for a chat, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the paramount thing in twelve months: which releases we enjoyed the most. Let's get started:
Title First Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"You can't expect my definitive list."
In the mobile realm, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "trying to find decent healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In real life."
Release Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. Fair enough.
Release Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into theatre school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was playing Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her avatar has a blooming utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her eldest sister has outside the game.
Release the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Release I Found Amusing That My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to build character so he can mature and play games for grownups. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. Superior than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted card game wizard’s poker, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you eventually realize and realise it is all just an attempt to suck you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a iconic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could deal with my problems so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just lacked the time or headspace to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the early morning after evening drinks.
Title That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was the previous year's surprise hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is remarkable. It just gets every single thing right. The core concept is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different special cards are so inventive it has become a game I would happily play at any hour. Add in the charm of the card design, and this is an true high-water mark of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Title I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a minor pile-on when I wrote about how a glitch in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I appreciated even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the reader who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I present that verbatim, because I respect the passion, and she is obviously an astute judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a punishingly tough Metroidvania-esque thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". What a joy. I acknowledge that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my mid-fifties. I was around back when all games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was fine when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many less comfortable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Close call between corporate partnerships that caused concern, and high launch costs. Both morally indefensible and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names bellowed from the garden at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or endless scrolling, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the day.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
